Blue Shield of California is looking to improve how they design, build, and operate data products by building and enhancing cloud data lakes, data warehouses, and marts that enable analytics, operational reporting, and advanced insights.
Requirements
- At least 1 year of coursework or hands ‑ on projects using SQL and at least one programming language (preferably Python)
- Fundamental understanding of databases, data structures, and basic software engineering practices (version control, testing)
- Familiarity with cloud data concepts (Azure or Snowflake), dbt, or data modeling basics
- Experience with analytics or data visualization (e.g., building queries for BI)
- Exposure to agile practices (Scrum/Kanban) and issue tracking tools (e.g., Jira)
- Interest in healthcare and using data to improve cost, quality, and experience
- Clear written and verbal communication; collaborative, curious, and eager to learn in a fast ‑ paced setting
Responsibilities
- Build & validate data pipelines under the guidance of senior engineers to move, transform, and quality ‑ check data for analytics and reporting
- Leverage AI tools and techniques to enhance data workflows - examples include using AI ‑ powered code assistants for development, applying machine learning models for data quality checks, and exploring generative AI for documentation or query optimization
- Contribute to data product features by translating user stories into small technical tasks, writing unit tests, and documenting changes
- Analyze and improve data quality, creating checks, profiling datasets, and assisting in root ‑ cause analysis for data issues
- Support solution design by drafting simple models, diagrams, or design notes and participating in design reviews
- Automate the boring stuff using CI/CD basics, version control, and repeatable scripts for development and testing
- Work the agile way: participate in stand ‑ ups, backlog refinement, demos, and retros; help track work in Jira

- Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s program in Computer Science, Data Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field with an anticipated graduation date June 2026 – June 2028 (or similar)
- Must reside in the state of California
- Clear written and verbal communication; collaborative, curious, and eager to learn in a fast ‑ paced setting
- Participate in impactful projects during a 10-week internship program
- Undertake a 10-week curriculum designed to familiarize interns with BSC, leadership development, exposure to the healthcare industry, and more
