Delta Dental of Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana needs to improve oral health through benefit plans, advocacy and community support, and amplify this mission by investing in initiatives that build healthy, smart, vibrant communities. The Actuarial Data Analyst will support the Actuarial and Underwriting teams by developing, maintaining, and troubleshooting data-driven projects, including forecasting, financial tracking, lag reports, rating formulas, sales requests, ad hoc reporting, and data governance.

Requirements

  • experience working with both structured and unstructured data sets and/or performing data analysis in a business setting
  • experience with Oracle-based systems and using PL/SQL, SAS and/or other querying languages to create and analyze data sets
  • experience with Python, R, Power BI, and Tableau preferred
  • the ability to work efficiently with both structured and unstructured data sources, including identification of trends or patterns
  • ability to translate business needs to more technically oriented teammates and convey more technical information in business-friendly terms to non-technical stakeholders
  • ability to convey written and oral summaries of data analysis to clients, team members, and business leaders
  • ability to lead end-to-end data analysis projects

Responsibilities

  • Improves, maintains, and troubleshoots existing programs that support core Actuarial functions, including, claims lag data, rating formula and factor management, profitability reporting, sales requests, and company and industry survey responses
  • Extracts, develops, and maintains data from databases by creating new or altering existing SQL scripts and queries.
  • Creates new reports that will provide timely, accurate, and relevant data to various business units; supporting and improving decision making across the company.
  • Develops and presents robust ad-hoc reports, data models, and deep dive analysis to provide clear observations so that managers can make more informed decisions.
  • Ensures efficient and accurate upload and maintenance of rates for individual products.
  • Collaborates with the Finance department to align and improve the company’s financial reporting suite and cadence to ensure necessary reporting is available and appropriate conclusions can be drawn.
  • Collaborates with the company’s central data area to provide accurate and meaningful data to essential stakeholders and ensure data needs are being met efficiently to advance data-related company initiatives.

Other

  • bachelor’s degree in mathematics, statistics, actuarial science, computer science, information systems, or a related field
  • three years of experience
  • Experience in the dental insurance industry, consulting and/or supporting product/service development preferred
  • Will accept any suitable combination of education, training, or experience.
  • strong working knowledge of Microsoft Excel
  • ability to analyze and resolve complex problems, use independent judgment and communicate effectively with internal and external contacts as necessary.
