RTX Corporation is seeking an Advanced Manufacturing Automation & Intelligence Research Engineer to develop, test, optimize, and demonstrate novel manufacturing technologies, with a focus on large platform metal additive manufacturing and directed energy deposition technologies, to improve system performance, reduce manufacturing time and cost, and enhance repeatability/reliability for Aerospace and Defense applications.
Requirements
- Manufacturing systems integration
- Experience with process sensing, monitoring equipment, and data collection
- Proficiency with industrial robotics (e.g., ABB, FANUC, KUKA, etc.) and/or related automation technologies (CNC systems, Siemens, FANUC, etc.)
- Hands-on experience with manufacturing processes, equipment, and sensors
- Hands-on experience with welding and metal additive manufacturing / 3D printing, including large platform wire and powder-fed directed energy deposition (DED)
- Experience configuring PLCs (e.g., Beckhoff, Allen-Bradley, Rockwell) for system automation, and integrating sensors using industrial communication protocols (e.g., DeviceNet, EtherNet/IP, ROS-Industrial)
- Scripting experience with Matlab, Python, VBA, JavaScript or similar
Responsibilities
- Development and deployment of advanced manufacturing equipment, including integration of sensors, industrial robotics, motion platforms, and process equipment (e.g. welding, additive manufacturing, cutting, deburring)
- Identify, develop, and demonstrate sensing and control approaches for large format metal additive manufacturing
- Integration and optimization of advanced manufacturing workflows, leveraging robotic/CNC motion platforms and process monitoring techniques
- Troubleshoot process and equipment issues and make necessary adjustments to achieve desired project outcomes
- Partner with engineers, technicians, and subject matter experts to identify and pursue technology initiatives
- Work with the team to develop concepts and marketing campaigns in pursuit of R&D funding from internal and external sources
- Work safely at all times, following all safety protocols and procedures
Other
- A University Degree or equivalent experience and minimum 5 years prior relevant experience, or An Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 3 years experience
- U.S. Citizenship required

- Experience writing proposals and leading R&D projects
