Internet2 seeks an AI Research and Technical Specialist to provide advanced technical expertise in artificial intelligence and data science for faculty, students, and institutions across Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs), enabling them to solve shared technology challenges and develop innovative solutions supporting their research, educational, and community service missions.
Requirements
- Minimum 3 years of experience with AI/ML workflows in research or applied science.
- Strong proficiency with Python, Jupyter, GitHub, and common AI/ML libraries (e.g., PyTorch, Hugging Face, scikit-learn).
- Demonstrated ability to consult on technical projects and deliver research-ready solutions.
- Familiarity with public cloud (AWS, Azure, GCP) and NSF-supported platforms (ACCESS, Jetstream2, Anvil).
- Experience with AI/ML workflows in research or applied science.
- Proficiency with Python, Jupyter, GitHub, and common AI/ML libraries (e.g., PyTorch, Hugging Face, scikit-learn).
- Ability to consult on technical projects and deliver research-ready solutions.
Responsibilities
- Provide one-on-one and group consulting to faculty and researchers on AI/ML workflows, data strategies, and computational approaches.
- Support proposal development by contributing technical expertise and assisting with drafting AI/ML components.
- Rapidly engage with NAIRR pilot participants and other NSF-funded projects to ensure successful adoption and retention of AI/ML allocations.
- Collaborate with faculty to move from science questions to results, including research outputs and peer-reviewed publications.
- Review computational methodologies, advise on reproducibility, and strengthen research dissemination.
- Identify opportunities for cross-institutional collaboration that can accelerate the delivery of products (publications, datasets, tools).
- Contribute to MS-CC-led workshops, hackathons, and incubator programs by bringing technical expertise to real-world problems.
Other
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, AI (may be a similar field) or related experience.
- Strong collaboration and problem-solving skills in multi-institutional or research settings.
- Ability to travel 20 – 30%.
- Experience working with HBCUs, TCUs, or other minority-serving institutions.
- Understanding of higher education research workflows and capacity-building environments.
