The Ohio State University's Department of Linguistics is seeking to hire a tenure-track faculty member at the rank of Assistant Professor who specializes in syntactic theory, with additional interest in artificial intelligence, to develop and maintain a productive research program, provide high-quality supervision, and teach graduate and undergraduate courses.

Requirements

  • A Ph.D. in Linguistics or doctoral degree in a related field
  • Mathematically rigorous approach to syntactic theory (e.g., logical or statistical)
  • Interest in artificial intelligence, particularly large language models (LLMs)
  • Experience with syntactic theory and its application to empirical data
  • Ability to develop and teach graduate and undergraduate courses in syntax and other areas of expertise
  • Experience with peer reviewing and/or other professional service
  • Familiarity with linguistic comprehension of LLMs

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain a productive, high-quality research program
  • Provide high-quality supervision of graduate and undergraduate research
  • Develop and teach high-quality graduate and undergraduate courses in syntax and other area(s) of expertise
  • Support departmental operations through administrative roles and/or service on committees as assigned
  • Contribute to the scholarly community via peer reviewing and/or other professional service
  • Apply a mathematically rigorous approach to hypothesizing about empirical syntactic data
  • Engage with large language models (LLMs) in connection with syntactic architecture or issues of syntactic processing or learnability

Other

  • A Ph.D. in Linguistics or doctoral degree in a related field is required prior to the start position date of August 15, 2026
