Requirements

  • Completion of ICD-10 coding course
  • Completion of Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine Abbreviated Injury Score course
  • Completion of American Trauma Society registrar course
  • 1 year experience with data analysis or customer resource management systems Required
  • Knowledge and ability to use computers including Microsoft word, excel, and outlook (Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel) Preferred
  • Ability to review and abstract relevant medical information from electronic medical records Preferred
  • Certified Abbreviated Injury Scale Specialist (CAISS) Preferred

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the identification/collection, entry, maintenance, and reporting of data into the trauma registry for the Pediatric Trauma Program as required by the New York State Department of Health (NY DOH) and the National Trauma Data Bank (NTDB) based on the NY DOH and NTDB standards.
  • Accurately identify all trauma admissions, transfers, and deaths, using clinical identifiers and strict inclusion/exclusion criteria.
  • Complete and verify for accuracy all data collected according to standards outlined by regulatory bodies- New York State/American College of Surgeons and as directed by the Trauma Program Manager (PTM) and Trauma Medical Director (TMD), including identification of all injuries, procedures, complications and outcomes.
  • Assign and accurately score all injuries utilizing the Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) and validate ICD diagnostic codes, operative codes, E-codes and modify as needed.
  • Analyze and interpret trauma data to provide both routine and ad hoc reports of trauma statistics and quality assurance filters used for weekly process improvement meetings, routine volume reporting, annual comprehensive reports, education/injury prevention, financial analysis, internal requests, and external oversight: ie) NYS DOH, ACS Committee on Trauma
  • Monitor security of data to ensure the integrity and reliability of database systems and ensure preventative and routine maintenance for the trauma registry.
  • Oversee the conversion, upload, and transfer of trauma registry data to other designated database systems, including local, state, and national systems; (NYS DOH, NTDB, TQIP)

Other

  • Bachelor's degree in statistical analysis, data base management, or related discipline Required
  • Graduate of approved Health Records Administration, Health information Technology Medical Records Technician Program, Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) Program *or
  • Licensure/credentials in clinical specialty such as Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse, or Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic
  • Strong attention to detail Required
  • Strong organizational, data analysis and problem-solving skills Required
