The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) is looking to solve some of the nation's most critical challenges, specifically in the areas of air and missile defense, by developing and applying algorithms from various disciplines such as artificial intelligence, data science, and information fusion.
Requirements
- Hold a Master’s degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics, physics, or a related field.
- Have at least five years of relevant professional technical experience.
- Have academic and/or work experience with one or more subject areas including data science, data engineering, software engineering, machine learning, optimization, and/or decision-making algorithms.
- A PhD degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics, physics, or a related field.
- At least seven years’ professional experience in algorithm or software development.
- Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, and develop multiple staff, and to cultivate relationships across organizational boundaries.
- Experience leading teams of 3+ staff.
Responsibilities
- Establish and evolve subject matter expertise across your section in data science, data engineering, software engineering, artificial intelligence, and others as appropriate.
- Inspire and empower A4I-2 staff to continuously improve in all aspects of their careers.
- Identify and prioritize tasking that enables high impact for air and missile defense missions, provides growth opportunities for Section staff, and encourages the development of future leaders.
- Lead the pursuit of AMDS Program Development funds (IR&D, Propulsion Grants, B&P) within the Section to begin developing promising new technologies.
- Ensure the Section has the vital competencies and resources needed to meet the needs of sponsors and vision of the Group.
- Ensure the effective planning and execution of Section tasking.
- Provide direct support to the Group Supervisor for vision setting; strategy development; setting execution priorities; recruiting/hiring/training new staff; proposing technical work that aligns with Group interests, AMDS Program Manager interests, and staff interests; and reviewing all technical work performed in your Section to ensure quality and timely products.
Other
- Hold an active Secret clearance, with an ability and willingness to attain a Top Secret clearance.
- Ability to travel less than 10% on the time for domestic non-local travel to support AMD programs is typical.
- Some additional local travel (within 50 mile radius of JHU/APL) to meet with sponsors, government labs, and contractors is expected.
