KBR is looking for a Data Scientist to support the Test Resource Management Center’s (TRMC) Big Data (BD) and Knowledge Management (KM) Team. The role involves analyzing DoD Test & Evaluation data to provide insights, optimize processes, and develop data-driven decision analysis products. The goal is to improve testing and evaluation capabilities for DoD modernization.

Requirements

  • Experience using a variety of data mining and data analysis methods.
  • Experience accessing data stored in a variety of data storage paradigms.
  • Experience developing models using common statistical and machine learning modeling approaches.
  • Experience using and creating custom algorithms.
  • Experience implementing analysis workflows in Python or R.
  • Experience using R and Python to engineer features, conduct analysis, visualize results, and build interactive analytic or decision support tools.
  • Experience using notebooks (Jupyter Notebooks and RMarkdown) to create reproducible and explainable products.

Responsibilities

  • Develop data-driven decision analysis products through the application of novel methods from data science, machine learning, and operations research.
  • Provide analytic consulting services, support analytic workflow and product development and testing.
  • Promote the user adoption of methods and best practices from data science.
  • Conduct applied methods projects and support the creation of analysis-ready data.
  • Analyze DoD datasets and demonstrate the 'art of the possible' to stakeholders.
  • Run and operate CHEETAS (and other tools), demonstrating them to stakeholders & VIPs.
  • Adapt internally-developed tools, notebooks and reports to meet emerging needs.

  • Applicants should possess a curiosity to explore data and possess a strong desire to learn new methods.
  • This position requires an advanced degree in operations research, engineering, applied math, statistics, or computer science with 15+ years of hands-on experience within DoD. Candidates with 10-15 years of DoD experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Entry level candidates will not be considered.
  • Previous experience should include working with end users, gathering requirements and developing data analysis tools or products to meet user needs and address analysis questions.
  • Previous experience should demonstrate a foundation in the appropriate application of quantitative methods from areas such as statistics, machine learning, operations research, and computational methods to provide analytic insights to challenging problems.
  • Previous experience should demonstrate an understanding of the fundamental challenges associated with application of computational methods to large data sets and a familiarity with modern technologies and architectures required to conduct analysis at scale.
  • Ability to make insightful recommendations based on data driven analysis and customer interactions.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing with customers and teammates.
  • Ability to speak and present findings in front of large technical and non-technical groups.
  • Ability to create documentation and repeatable procedures to enable reproducible research.
  • Ability to create training and educational content for novice end users on the use of tools and novel analytic methods.
  • Self-motivated to design, develop, enhance, reengineer or integrate software applications to improve the quality of data outputs available for end users.
  • Knowledge of methods from operations research, statistical and machine learning, data science, and computer science sufficient to select appropriate methods for novel analysis problems and defend their use.
  • Knowledge of computer programming concepts, data structures and storage architectures, to include relational and non-relational databases, distributed computing frameworks, and modeling and simulation experimentation sufficient to inform selection of appropriate methods when working on novel problems in these areas.
  • 25% with potential surge to 50% to support end users located at various DoD ranges & labs located across the US (including Alaska and Hawaii).
