The Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at East Carolina University is seeking a Data Scientist to support an NIH R01-funded study investigating the genetic and clinical factors that contribute to glaucoma and vision health disparities.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of statistical genetics concepts and tools preferred
  • Experience working in academic or healthcare-related research setting
  • Experience working with large-scale clinical or genomic datasets
  • Proficiency in Python, R, SQL, or other relevant programming languages
  • Familiarity with database design, management, and querying
  • Programming tools (Python, SQL, etc.)
  • NIH data security guidelines

Responsibilities

  • Utilize programming tools (Python, SQL, etc.) to support data integration, cleaning, and analysis.
  • Access and utilize data from various sources, including the Million Veteran Program, NIH All of Us Research Program, regional clinical data systems, and lab-generated datasets from ongoing studies, while ensuring compliance with NIH data security guidelines, ECU, and ECU Health data governance policies.
  • Support statistical genetics workflows, including data formatting, quality control, and preliminary analyses.
  • Summarize data and produce visualizations, reports, and other deliverables to support dissemination activities.
  • Assist in the interpretation of results related to glaucoma, health disparities, and genetic risk.
  • Perform additional tasks as needed to support the broader research program of Team Cooke Bailey and the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology
  • Build and manage a secure, relational database for clinical and genetic data.

Other

  • Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the field assigned and one year of related training or experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
