AccuWeather is looking for an experienced Data Scientist III to help push the boundaries of weather prediction and atmospheric data science. In this role, you'll develop advanced models and analytics to better forecast severe weather, tropical storms, and high-impact events—turning massive datasets into insights that power decisions across industries like retail, energy, and advertising.
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience in applying advanced meteorological algorithms, models, or similar technologies to support a wide range of weather-impacted applications, with a strong emphasis on operational forecasting, severe weather analysis, or climate data science
- Expert-level proficiency in meteorological datasets and analytical techniques including data mining, transformation, and verification, with hands-on experience in remote sensing data such as satellite or radar and observational networks
- Advanced knowledge or programming languages (Python, SQL, C++) for sophisticated analysis and model implementation
- Familiarity with big data technologies (Spark preferred) to hand and analyze large datasets efficiently
- Proven abilities to translate complex business requirements into innovative and effective weather-data-driven solutions
Responsibilities
- Develop and enhance meteorological models and datasets and models leveraging AccuWeather's extensive data archives to better predict weather phenomena including severe weather from hail swaths, tropical storm paths, and convective wind events
- Analyze, interpret, and validate model results to inform data teams of areas for improvements, ensuring high accuracy and reliability
- Present findings to internal and external stakeholders, highlighting the why behind the analysis and how it benefits AccuWeather and AccuWeather data users
- Support data operations and data engineering on feature extraction, transformation and loading (ETL) from various sources, optimizing for efficiency and meteorological consistency
- Lead cross-departmental initiatives that provide insights to support a diverse range of business applications across different industry sectors, such as retail, advertising, energy, etc.
- Mentor and guide other Data Scientists and ML Engineers, fostering a collaborative and inclusive team environment
- Advance the field of atmospheric data science through original research, peer-reviewed publications, and active participation in scientific conferences and professional communities

- Demonstrated success in leading and executing large-scale meteorological projects ideally in a production or enterprise environment
- Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and convey complex concepts to non-experts clearly and effectively
- Strong presentation skills to articulate findings and insights to senior management and external stakeholders
