Transforming Indigenous Archival Search seeks a Developer to make cultural-technical upgrades in SNAC, and to collaboratively develop and test initiatives that maximize archivally-held data for the purpose of increasing exposure and access to Native and Indigenous collections and linking related information resources.

Requirements

  • professional experience with technology-focused metadata projects, scripting, and data manipulation
  • Experience using or architecting APIs
  • Experience with programming in PHP and JavaScript (or similar languages) and SQL; data storage, manipulation and transformation tools, technologies and methodologies (e.g., OpenRefine, Python, Ruby)
  • Familiarity with ontology development and structured data standards, such as controlled vocabularies and thesauri
  • Experience with analyzing, creating and documenting procedures such as service standards, policies, procedures and workflows
  • Knowledge of range of linked data standards and tools such as RDF triple-stores, SPARQL queries, JSON-LD, IIIF, BIBFRAME, and/or the Web Annotation standard
  • Knowledge of XML schema, XSLT stylesheets, metadata cross-walks, and principles for designing and/or adapting existing work from related domains

Responsibilities

  • Perform in-depth technical analysis of SNAC infrastructure, and conceive, design, test, and implement appropriate technical infrastructures in SNAC for Native and Indigenous archival records and information, in collaboration with UVA partners, Linked Data Coordinator, Metadata Librarian, SNAC’s Technical Infrastructure Working Group, and Editorial Standards Working Group, and Project Team.
  • Conceive, design, test, and implement innovative technical infrastructures to facilitate use of systems for Native and Indigenous archival records and information search and findability.
  • Implement a wide range of cultural-technical upgrades to SNAC to allow it to better represent Indigenous historical figures, collections, and communities, including enhancements to representational fields, controlled vocabularies, variant name searching, and technical features such as the ArchivesSpace and OpenRefine plugin from a community-based perspective.
  • Provide technical support for the project, including development of scripts, APIs, or other transformation tools
  • Act as technical lead during events or core project discussions or meetings.
  • Consults with SNAC’s Technical Infrastructure Working Group, Project Team, UVA partners, and community archival partners to suggest cultural-technical solutions for representing Native and Indigenous collections.
  • Develops community-based workflows and associated documentation for technical tools required to complete data import and export, batch transformations, plugins to OpenRefine and ArchivesSpace, via Github sites, or other training or outward facing technical materials in SNAC, and beyond.
