PlanetScale is growing rapidly and reinventing the database space. The PlanetScale platform offers both Postgres and Vitess databases. Vitess, an open-source database clustering system for horizontal scaling of MySQL, enables businesses to efficiently handle large-scale data workloads — without sacrificing developer experience. Customers entrust PlanetScale with their data, so the stakes are high. PlanetScale is looking for a Developer Educator to create engaging and technically rigorous content in the database space.

Requirements

  • Deep technical knowledge of databases and distributed systems
  • Strong understanding of relational databases (Postgres, MySQL)
  • Proven ability to create technical content (samples of blog posts, tutorials, documentation, or speaking engagements)
  • Experience speaking at conferences or hosting technical presentations
  • Experience with Vitess or other distributed database technologies
  • Knowledge of distributed systems and database scaling challenges

Responsibilities

  • You will create deeply technical written content about Postgres and Vitess that is both educational and fun to read
  • You will assist with technical product documentation
  • You will host livestreams and webinars to engage with and educate our community

Other

  • You will speak at conferences and events, representing PlanetScale in the database and engineering community
  • You will interact with the database community both virtually and in person
  • Your role may contain up to 20% travel to connect with developers at events worldwide
  • You are passionate about teaching complex technical concepts in accessible ways
  • You are a natural communicator who can adapt your message for different audiences
  • You thrive in community settings and enjoy building relationships with developers
  • You have excellent writing skills and can produce content that developers actually want to read
  • You are self-motivated and can manage multiple content projects independently
  • You hate AI slop
  • 3+ years of experience in engineering, technical education, or developer relations
  • Willingness to travel up to 20% of the time
  • Previous experience at a database or infrastructure company
