Xcel Energy is seeking candidates to support our Substation Communication Engineering Department, specifically in Denver, CO or Minneapolis, MN. Substation Communication Engineering is responsible for the critical task of providing secure and reliable communication circuits to substations for SCADA, teleprotection, and remote access to ensure the reliable operation of the electric power system. We also manage substation cyber-security, and operations network architecture/planning.
Requirements
- Enrolled in an ABET accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science
- Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
- Course work in power generation or project management.
- Interest in the power industry or industrial control systems
Responsibilities
- Support engineering efforts on Capital Projects
- Help resolve remote device connectivity issues and other device troubleshooting
- Onboard and troubleshoot substation firewalls
- Update and maintain the engineering lab network and device configurations
- Support department automation efforts
Other
- A current Sophomore or above (as of May 2026).
- Ability to communicate effectively; both written and verbally
- Must be self- motivated, have good mechanical aptitude, and ability to work well with others
- Able to commute to the corporate office in Denver, C - hybrid schedule
- Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week)/ part time during the fall (up to 20 hours a week).
