Lumen is seeking a forward-thinking Summer Intern to join its AI Governance team and help shape the future of responsible AI. This role offers hands-on experience in implementing enterprise-wide AI governance strategies aligned with the NIST AI Risk Management Framework and ISO 42001 standards. The intern will support efforts to evaluate AI systems for fairness, transparency, and accountability, refine governance policies, and translate complex regulations into operational practices.

Requirements

  • Strong interest in AI lifecycle, NIST AI Risk Management Framework (RMF), AI ethics, and regulatory trends and proposals, and their application to enterprise AI Governance.
  • Common security risks specific to AI/ML and emerging AI technologies (e.g., adversarial attacks, model exfiltration, poisoning and supply chain vulnerabilities).
  • Fundamentals of risk assessment and control documentation as they relate to technical AI systems and regulatory compliance.
  • Familiarity with AI/ML concepts, MLOps, or LLMOps is a plus.
  • Experience or coursework with data science and basic coding concepts to facilitate communications with technical teams.

Responsibilities

  • Support the implementation of Lumen’s AI governance strategy in accordance with the NIST AI RMF and ISO 42001 standards.
  • Assist in evaluating existing AI systems for fairness, transparency, and accountability.
  • Help refine AI governance policies, standards, and procedures.
  • Translate legislative and regulatory requirements into actionable operational guidelines.
  • Assist in identifying and documenting AI-specific risks and controls throughout the development lifecycle to comply with the identified requirements.
  • Research emerging AI policy trends and regulations like the EU AI Act, White House Executive Orders, and various state-level initiatives, and synthesize key implications for the AI Governance team.
  • Focus on the identification, classification, and mitigation of algorithmic and infrastructure security risks across the AI portfolio, ensuring alignment with enterprise-wide security frameworks.

  • Program eligibility is contingent on the candidate’s commitment of the entire 10-week program. No exceptions will be made
  • Enrolled at a 4-year accredited college or university, rising senior level education status at the start of the internship.
  • Graduating August 2026 – May 2028
  • Intern must be able to work 40 hours per week during the 10-week program (June 1 – August 6, 2065)
  • Excellent communication and analytical skills.
