The Lansing Board of Water & Light (BWL) has an opening for an engineering Intern in its Project Engineering Department to assist with engineering, designing, and problem-solving for various utility facilities and infrastructure projects.
Requirements
- Currently enrolled in an accredited educational institution in an engineering program (e.g., preference in civils/structural, but may include chemical, mechanical, industrial, reliability, electrical) with junior or senior status during the summer of 2026.
Responsibilities
- Design a small project or portion of a larger project and monitor through the various design phases with the guidance of a mentor.
- Aid in active electrical, mechanical, or civil structural projects and activities.
- Assist with the Design, Construction, Commissioning, Material Procurement, Construction Specifications, and other similar tasks.
- Investigate and Specify materials needed on projects throughout the BWL.
- The intern will work on a small independent project or task, or they will work on a portion of a much larger project in conjunction with an experienced engineer.
- The PED Engineering Intern will also help with studies, material specifications, estimates, budgets, and drawing revisions.

- Required to follow BWL Safety Manual and wear personal protective equipment for all field work.
- Attends training and safety awareness and/or skills improvement as required by the BWL or government agency such as MIOSHA.
- Expected to comply with all BWL policies and work rules.
- Predictable and reliable attendance.
- Must successfully complete a background check, a substance screening and a physical (if applicable).
