The Computer Science Research Institute (CSRI) at Sandia seeks graduate interns to participate in collaborative research across a wide range of areas in computer science, applied mathematics, discrete mathematics, mathematical modeling, computational science and engineering, and high-performance computing to address national security challenges.

Requirements

  • Software development and programming experience (C++, C, Fortran, Matlab, Java, Python)
  • Knowledge or the interest to learn parallel programming such as MPI, OpenMP, and/or threads
  • Experience with mathematical modeling techniques (e.g., linear and integer programming, statistical modeling, system dynamics modeling)

Responsibilities

  • Participate in collaborative research across a wide range of areas in computer science, applied mathematics, discrete mathematics, mathematical modeling, computational science and engineering, and high-performance computing.
  • Conduct research in areas including quantum computing, artificial intelligence, machine learning, advanced computer architectures, systems software, parallel algorithms, programming languages and paradigms, data sciences, materials, combinatorial mathematics, discrete event simulation, scalable solvers, continuous and discrete optimization, uncertainty quantification, statistics, multiscale methods and mathematics, multiphysics modeling, visualization, meshing, advanced modeling and simulation, human decision modeling, and brain inspired computing.
  • Apply computational methods to scientific and engineering applications including shock physics, molecular dynamics, magnetohydrodynamics, computational fluid dynamics, electrical systems, and climate security.
  • Gain research experience in a highly collaborative research environment.
  • Work directly with Sandia staff scientists on project-based research.
  • Gain exposure to a wide range of computational research at Sandia.

  • Currently attending and enrolled full time in the spring term immediately preceding the internship (or scheduled to graduate in the spring) in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
  • Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer
  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship
  • Communication skills appropriate for participating in multi-disciplinary research teams
