Uber's Localization Team is seeking a Localization Operations Manager with extensive experience in Machine Learning (ML) Program Management to support the growth and evolution of our global localization capabilities. The role aims to enhance translation quality, scalability, and cost-effectiveness by evaluating and integrating state-of-the-art ML solutions tailored to the diverse linguistic and cultural needs of Uber's global customer base.

Requirements

  • 4+ years of program management experience in machine learning, NLP, or localization technology domains
  • Strong understanding of Machine Translation (MT) and Large Language Models (LLMs)-including their capabilities, limitations, and integration patterns
  • Experience managing cross-functional AI/ML initiatives, especially involving engineering, product, and vendor teams
  • Hands-on familiarity with MLOps or LLMOps practices, such as model lifecycle management, evaluation, deployment, and monitoring
  • Proven ability to translate business needs into technical requirements, especially for global content and localization workflows
  • Experience deploying or fine-tuning LLMs or MT models (e.g., OpenNMT, Marian, BLOOM, GPT, Mistral, T5, etc.) in production environments
  • Strong technical literacy-comfortable reviewing architecture diagrams, ML pipelines, or API documentation and providing structured feedback

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement comprehensive MT and LLM programs that support both Uber's internal operations and external clients, ensuring alignment with our global communication and localization strategies.
  • Build seamless integration points between Uber's internal services and tools, connecting them to our MT/LLM pipeline.
  • Serve as a technical liaison for internal stakeholders and external clients-gathering requirements, identifying integration opportunities, and optimizing the pipeline for efficiency and utility.
  • Partner with the Localization Operations (LocOps) and Language Model Engineering teams to select, evaluate, train, and deploy the most effective MT and LLM models.
  • Respond to and fulfill team member requests related to MT and LLM programs.
  • Provide support and training as needed to ensure effective adoption and usage of these technologies across the organization.
  • Collaborate with data analysts and engineers to create a user-friendly dashboard that provides actionable insights into MT/LLM performance.

  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, including experience working with external clients or partners
  • Comfortable working in fast-paced, ambiguous environments with shifting priorities and distributed teams
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computational Linguistics, Program Management, or related field (or equivalent work experience)
  • Advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in Computer Science, Computational Linguistics, Artificial Intelligence, or a related field
  • Familiarity with localization tools and platforms (e.g., Lokalise, Phrase, Crowdin, SDL Trados, uLabel, etc.) and quality frameworks like MQM or tRanking
