Waymo is seeking a Machine Learning Engineer to advance scene understanding capabilities for safe and efficient autonomous driving, focusing on improving perception systems and scaling autonomous solutions.
Requirements
- 6+ years of experience in Machine Learning, with a focus on computer vision and perception tasks.
- Deep expertise in state-of-the-art ML techniques such as object detection, classification, tracking, pose estimation, and action recognition.
- Proficiency with at least one major deep learning framework (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch, JAX).
- Experience with multi-modal perception systems integrating camera, lidar, radar data.
- Familiarity with foundation models and techniques such as transfer learning, few-shot learning, and domain adaptation.
- Ability to optimize ML models for real-time, on-device deployment.
- Published research in top-tier ML/CV conferences (e.g., NeurIPS, CVPR, ICML, ICCV, ECCV) is a plus.
Responsibilities
- Lead modeling initiatives within your domain, focusing on nominal, longtail, and fine-grained scene understanding tasks.
- Utilize onboard and offboard foundation models to streamline and enhance the perception model stack.
- Develop and implement strategies for rapid adaptation of models to new environments, data, and tasks.
- Establish and maintain a sustainable, scalable model architecture to support multi-platform deployment efforts.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate perception models into the overall autonomous driving system.
- Conduct rigorous testing and validation of models to ensure safety, accuracy, and robustness in diverse environments.
- Stay abreast of emerging ML research and incorporate innovative techniques into the perception systems.

- Proven leadership experience in managing and mentoring engineering or research teams.
- PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent deep learning experience.
- Background in autonomous driving, robotics, or safety-critical systems is preferred.
