Rivian is seeking a materials testing expert to join their Failure Analysis and Materials Engineering team to develop material testing specifications, execute testing, and ensure material data is broadly available and used accurately across Rivian.
Requirements
- Expert level knowledge and experience in testing including but not limited to: UV Exposure/Accelerated Weathering, Temperature/Humidity, Wear, Abrasion, Color/Glass, Adhesion, Corrosion/Salt Fog
- Experience writing and editing testing and materials standards.
- Regular utilization of common industry material testing specifications (ASTM, ISO, AWS, etc.)
- Material testing data processing and analysis. Ability to apply statistical methods to analyze fatigue test results, determine statistical parameters, and plot S–N curves incorporating specific probabilities of failure.
- Experience with material property databases such as Ansys Granta or Applus Matereality.
- Familiarity with primary automotive structures such as Body, Interior and Chassis assemblies.
- Experience with the metallurgy of steel and aluminum alloys, their manufacturing methods and microstructure features as they relate to material properties.
Responsibilities
- Perform a wide variety of materials testing and validation on materials coming from across Rivian shops.
- Establish test parameters for unique situations. Design and manufacture testing samples and fixturing for novel testing requirements.
- Analyze and understand how fixture design may impact testing results.
- Draft drawings for fixtures and test specimens that can be carried out by our machine shop.
- Write, update, and maintain update Rivian materials testing specifications.
- Process and analyze testing data.
- Produce clear and concise reports to summarize data collected.
Other
- 4+ years of experience in materials testing.
- BS or MS in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or another relevant field.
- Desire to promote a culture of health and safety in the laboratory.
- Top-notch communication skills and ability to develop testing strategies through 1:1 conversation with engineers, designers, and manufacturing.
- Ability to work in a team environment and manage lab work requests and competing priorities.
