At Apple, the development and integration of revolutionary materials into products is essential to mechanical and electrical integrity, aesthetics, and overall feel, and the goal is to decarbonize the alloy materials used across Apple hardware products

Requirements

  • BS/MS/PhD in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering
  • Strong materials fundamentals in extractive metallurgy and process-structure-properties-performance relationships
  • Knowledge of lifecycle assessment (LCA) methods, industrial ecology, and carbon foot-printing
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to use statistical tools and techniques
  • Experience in metal production technology or process development (e.g. beneficiation, smelting, refining, recycling)
  • Experience conducting or interpreting lifecycle assessments for carbon foot-printing purposes
  • Minimum 3 years experience in relevant industry

Responsibilities

  • Create and drive the environmental path for alloy materials in support of Apple’s ambitious environmental goals
  • Collaborate closely with other Apple teams and suppliers to identify decarbonization opportunities
  • Push development of decarbonization technologies, processes, and materials
  • Support materials engineers evaluating and qualifying lower-carbon impact materials
  • Partner with Apple teams, Apple suppliers, and outside technology companies to identify and develop the technologies needed to decarbonize materials
  • Use lifecycle assessment techniques coupled with an understanding of Apple materials, products, and supply chains to identify decarbonization opportunities
  • Ideate, test, evaluate, select, validate and scale decarbonization technologies to intercept with product roadmaps
