GM Performance Power Units LLC is seeking a Performance Engineering Manager to lead the performance development of their Formula 1 power unit (PU) program, aiming to maximize competitive performance through advanced modeling, data analysis, and real-time support.
Requirements
- 8+ years of experience in powertrain or performance engineering within F1 or elite motorsports (e.g., WEC, IndyCar, Formula E).
- In-depth knowledge of hybrid power units, ICE performance metrics, energy recovery systems, and fuel strategies.
- Strong data analysis skills using MATLAB, Simulink, ATLAS, MoTeC, or similar tools.
- Working knowledge of Siemens NX, GT Power, and other 1D and 3D simulation Tools
- Hands-on experience with race strategy, deployment optimization, and powertrain calibration.
- Advanced simulation experience (real-time models, hardware-in-the-loop environments).
- Familiarity with hybrid system integration and performance trade-offs between ICE and ERS components.
Responsibilities
- Lead the Performance Engineering group responsible for simulation, performance modeling, calibration strategy, and real-time data analysis of the F1 power unit.
- Own the definition and tracking of performance targets, including power output, fuel efficiency, energy recovery, and deployment strategies.
- Drive the development and validation of performance tools, including 1D, 3D and real-time simulation models (GT-Power, MATLAB/Simulink, etc.).
- Collaborate with ICE, ERS, controls, and vehicle integration teams to ensure performance optimization across the full power unit system.
- Lead pre-event and post-event performance reviews, working closely with trackside operations and race engineers.
- Analyze on-track data and develop strategies to enhance competitiveness while ensuring power unit reliability.
- Represent the performance group in technical decision-making meetings, reporting findings and recommendations to executive and technical leadership.
