Brookhaven National Laboratory is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to address challenges in Lattice Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) computations and related areas such as high-performance computing, quantum computing, and machine learning, in collaboration with the RIKEN BNL Research Center.
Requirements
- The position requires a Ph.D. in Theoretical Elementary Particle Physics, High Energy Theory or Nuclear Physics Theory
- Expertise and knowledge of lattice quantum field theory and hadron physics
- Knowledge of field theory, hadron physics, particle phenomenology, & nuclear physics
- Knowledge of algorithms (e.g. sparse linear system, Markov Chain Monte Carlo, multi grid) in high performance computing.
- Experience in developing high performance computing software
- Machine learning
- Quantum computing
Responsibilities
- Studies and developments in Lattice Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) computations & related subjects (such as high-performance computing, quantum computing, machine learning etc.), possibly collaborating with members of neighboring BNL groups, national laboratories & universities.
Other
- The chosen candidate will be hired for an initial term of two years, with a third year possible, subject to performance & funding availability.

- Starting date is flexible: from January 2, 2026, to October 30, 2026.
- While the position is based at BNL in Upton, NY, domestic & international travel may be required.
- BNL policy requires that after obtaining a PhD, eligible candidates for research associate appointments may not exceed a combined total of 5 years of relevant work experience as a post-doc &/or in an R&D position, excluding time associated with family planning, military service, illness or other life-changing events.
