Microsoft's CoreAI organization is responsible for building the end-to-end Artificial Intelligence (AI) stack, driving Azure AI innovation and powering flagship products. The team is focused on developing Responsible AI, Azure OpenAI, Model as a Service, Azure Machine Learning, Cognitive Services, and global Azure AI infrastructure for large-scale AI workloads. The immediate need is to hire a Principal Applied Scientist to contribute to the development of AI systems that are safe, secure, and trustworthy, empowering users and organizations.

Requirements

  • Experience and familiarity with large language models (LLMs).
  • Experience with and a solid foundation in large distributed systems, algorithms, and software engineering principles.
  • Have hands-on experience with deep learning and transformer-based models
  • Understand methods for training and fine-tuning LLMs, including distillation, supervised fine-tuning, and policy optimization.

Responsibilities

  • develop machine learning techniques that push the boundaries of safety, alignment, and trustworthy AI
  • collaborate across product, research, and engineering teams to design, build, and maintain responsible AI systems
  • make an impact at scale—from early-stage development and experimentation to production, monitoring, and continuous iteration

Other

  • Doctorate in relevant field AND 3+ years related research experience + OR equivalent experience.
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role.
  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
  • Master’s or PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Data Science, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in a research/ML engineering or an applied research scientist position, ideally with a focus on AI safety.
