Gusto is seeking a Product Counsel to advise and partner with business teams to enhance and scale Gusto's growing suite of tech-based business entity management services, tools and resources designed around and for US employers.
Requirements
- 7+ years of combined legal experience, with experience working in a law firm supporting businesses both large and small.
- Experience must include corporate/business law, while experience in-house at a tech company or advising tech companies on product development is a plus.
- Experience providing pragmatic legal guidance.
- Experience with AI, business insurance, data privacy, consumer protection, and/or start-up law.
Responsibilities
- Counsel the product, engineering, and design teams on a range of issues including entity formation/dissolution, governance, state and federal business compliance and general business matters.
- Research and advise on complex regulatory frameworks for obtaining and maintaining business licenses and business insurance that may be required by Federal, State and local governments.
- Contribute to our product suite from ideation through launch and future enhancements.
- Contribute to key initiatives helping to mature our Legal & Compliance team's functions.

- JD degree and a member of a State bar/active license to practice law.
- A collaborative approach and demonstrated ability to work well independently under pressure, while contributing to cross-functional teams.
- Enthusiasm and passion for how technology can streamline and improve entity formation, business governance and compliance processes and painpoints.
- Demonstrated ability to build consensus and build strong relationships.
- An eagerness to dive in, build, and drive projects independently.
- Experience creatively solving problems, taking into account legal risk and business needs.
- A team player mindset (no job is too big or too small).
- Attention to detail and the ability to follow through in a fast-paced environment.
- Employees who are based in those locations will be expected to work from the office on designated days approximately 2-3 days per week (or more depending on role).
- When approved to work from a location other than a Gusto office, a secure, reliable, and consistent internet connection is required.
