Cummins Inc. is looking for a Product Design Technician - Level IV to join their Engineering team in Jamestown, NY, to elevate product quality, ensure drawing and model integrity, mentor designers, and evaluate engineering risks.

Requirements

  • Deep mechanical systems knowledge fuels innovative design.
  • Precision in specifications ensures manufacturability and inspection accuracy.
  • Strong configuration and change management keeps product data aligned and secure.
  • Lifecycle thinking ensures designs are robust and future-proof.
  • System-level design thinking connects parts to the whole.
  • Commitment to standards drives consistency and quality.
  • Experience with measurement tools (calipers, micrometers, CMMs).
  • Teardown, assembly/disassembly, and inspection of mechanical components.
  • Drafting/GD&T skills
  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes (machining, casting, welding, forming, etc.)
  • Practical troubleshooting of equipment, test rigs, or prototypes

Responsibilities

  • Apply specialized design knowledge to elevate product quality.
  • Ensure drawing and model integrity from concept to release.
  • Create assemblies and concept models that ensure seamless fit and function.
  • Analyze and validate designs using cutting-edge tools.
  • Evaluate engineering risks to strengthen product reliability.
  • Produce solid models, detailed drawings, and bills of materials that clearly communicate design intent across teams and meet all relevant standards.
  • Track and control design changes from concept to obsolescence, maintaining the integrity of product baselines throughout.

  • Guide Product Design Technicians, prioritize work effectively, and ensure engineering requests are ready for execution—setting the tone for team
  • Mentor and train designers across experience levels.
  • Foster growth and consistency by sharing your knowledge, coaching others, and reinforcing best practices in design and documentation.

  • Technical writing and communication (clear documentation and reporting)
  • Stakeholder management and cross-functional teamwork
  • Ability to write technical reports, present findings, and communicate with suppliers/customers in business settings.
  • Cross-functional communication bridges design with execution.
  • High school diploma, certificate of completion of secondary education or equivalent experience in an appropriate STEM field is required.
  • Regionally applicable certification or two year Associates Degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant field of study may be required.
  • This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.
  • Requires significant relevant work experience or specialized skills obtained through education, training or on-the-job experience.
