VDOT is looking to solve the problem of improving safety, mobility on the road, and bringing efficiencies to the department through data-driven insights in decision-making by leading, directing, and managing the planning, design, and implementation of its data analytics and data science program.
Requirements
- Ability to apply machine-learning concepts to develop predictive indicators of performance.
- Ability to work effectively in various software applications and database types, including various cloud platforms, MS Office products and web-based applications.
- Knowledge of data science, statistical analysis and interpretation, data management, business process improvement, and performance management.
- Knowledge of program evaluation techniques as well as development and implementation practices.
- Skilled in a wide-range of coding languages, platforms, application tools.
- Experience providing expertise in AI and ML, statistical analysis, regression analysis and other advanced mathematical modeling and algorithm development.
- Knowledge of build-buy analysis processes and procedures.
Responsibilities
- Innovation and Best Practices: Work with the industry and academic institutions to bring best practices and latest tools, techniques and procedures to VDOT and train others in using them.
- Leadership: Provide leadership and drive consistency in the application of tools and techniques throughout the department and guide others in the proper selection of coding languages, application tools, build-buy analysis etc.
- Partnership: Work with VDOT executive leadership to identify, plan, develop and deliver data science projects and algorithms to improve safety, mobility on the road as well as bring efficiencies to the department through data-driven insights in decision-making.
- Supervision and Project Management: Supervise VDOT and staff augmentation consultant resources in the effective delivery of the program.
- Provide expertise in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML), statistical analysis, regression analysis and other advanced mathematical modeling and algorithm development.
- Develop and implement data science projects and algorithms to improve safety, mobility on the road as well as bring efficiencies to the department.
- Guide others in the proper selection of coding languages, application tools, build-buy analysis etc.

- A combination of training, experience, or education in Data Science, Statistics, Systems Engineering, Information Technology or related field desired.
