Meta's Reality Labs Research is seeking a Research Scientist to innovate and prototype immersive augmented reality (AR) display technology concepts, specifically focusing on exposure methods, architectures, and processes for patterning novel photonic devices to create pervasive and universal MR and AR experiences.

Requirements

  • 1+ year(s) of experience in academic or industrial setting in design, development, and testing of custom optical exposure methodologies and processes
  • 1+ year(s) of experience in the fabrication and functional testing of novel photonic devices such as metastructures, photonic integrated circuits, holographic elements, diffractive, refractive structures, etc
  • 1+ year(s) of experience in academic or industrial settings with scientific programming languages such as MATLAB, Python, Mathematica, or similar
  • 3+ years of experience in hardware prototyping (e.g., bench prototyping, basic electronics, and software system integration).
  • 3+ years of experience in design, fabrication and testing of novel optical structures such as metastructures, holographic elements, sub-wavelength diffractive structures, etc.
  • 3+ years of experience in academic or industrial setting in design, development, and testing of custom optical exposure methodologies and processes.
  • Background in nanophotonics with rigorous electromechanical modeling experience, such as with COMSOL, Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD), Rigorous Coupled-Wave Analysis (RCWA), etc.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, build, optimize, calibrate, characterize, and troubleshoot new optical tools and processes for fabricating optical components and systems with holographic materials
  • Engage and collaborate cross-functionally with metrology/characterization, materials, and design team members to: co-optimize device and process, establish a fundamental understanding of as-built physical optics, identify and validate sources of gaps in desired display performance, and address the key technology gaps and mature technology towards productization
  • Collaborate with optomechanical engineers to develop specification documents for system and sub-components and engage with external suppliers as well as identify needs and plans for creation of custom solutions
  • Manage external partnership with vendors and instrument manufacturers to enable and validate new components and technologies
  • Troubleshoot and optimize existing fabrication processes and technologies
  • Collaborate with research teams and lab management in planning, executing, and evolving exposure platforms and processes
  • Partner with cross functional teams, technical program managers and leadership to devise and execute on the program priorities

Other

  • Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience. Degree must be completed prior to joining Meta
  • Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining, a PhD degree in Engineering, Optical Sciences, Physics, Optical Materials, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience. Degree must be completed prior to joining Meta
  • Must obtain work authorization in country of employment at the time of hire, and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment
  • Experience working and communicating cross-functionally in a team environment.
  • Proven track record of achieving significant results as demonstrated by grants, fellowships, patents, as well as first-authored publications at leading workshops or conferences.
