The University of Warwick is seeking a part-time Research Software Engineer (RSE) to lead the design and implementation of an open software and data infrastructure to support the applied research and training of 60 PhD students over the next 8 years for the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Diversity in Data Visualisation (DIVERSE CDT). This infrastructure will facilitate data visualization research conducted and reported through computational notebooks and bring together students, academics, and partners.
Requirements
- Competent in developing technical data and data visualisation infrastructure.
- Comfortable working with web-based programming languages, particularly JavaScript.
- Competent in setting up an efficient and secure data infrastructure.
- Experience in web-based development.
- Experience in data and database technologies.
- Experience in open science practices.
- Experience in web-based data visualisation technologies such as D3 or Observable would be desirable.
Responsibilities
- Lead the design and implementation of an open software and data infrastructure.
- Develop an infrastructure that enables data visualisation research conducted and reported through computational notebooks (e.g., using Javascript and Observable Notebooks).
- Develop and maintain an efficient and secure data infrastructure that enables the development of web-based visualisations with and through literate computing technologies such as Observable Notebooks.
- Support PhD students in conducting their research through this infrastructure.
- Provide guidance and specialised training to PhD students on good research software engineering practice and open practices within software development.
- Work with academics, external partners, and CDT students to set up and manage this infrastructure.
- Collaborate in aspects of the research enabled by the infrastructure and explore practices and tools within interdisciplinary Research Software Engineering.

- The successful candidate is expected to work closely with the broader CDT team and this would also include academics based at City St George’s, University of London.
