Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) is seeking to leverage AI for scientific discovery, workflow acceleration, and computational science advancements, as well as for security applications. This involves developing and applying state-of-the-art AI models, including training, tuning, adaptation, benchmarking, and integration with various resources and data sources to solve challenging DOE problems.
Requirements
- Strong programming skills and solid computer science fundamentals, with proficiency in AI frameworks and libraries (e.g., PyTorch).
- Demonstrated research or engineering experience, evidenced by software contributions (e.g., GitHub projects) or publications in the AI field.
- Practical experience developing novel AI algorithms and models and applying such models to scientific or security problems.
- Experience with large-scale AI model training.
- Proficiency with modern software development practices and tools, such as containerization (Docker, Singularity), source control (Git), continuous integration, and MLOps frameworks
Responsibilities
- Conduct research and development in AI for various problems relating to scientific discovery, workflow acceleration, and computational science advancements.
- Implement, adapt, and evaluate state-of-the-art AI algorithms for scientific applications.
- Collaborate closely with interdisciplinary teams of domain scientists and subject matter experts to translate research into impactful solutions.
- Communicate and disseminate research progress, challenges, and achievements through publications, presentations, and engagement with collaborators across BNL, DOE, and external partners.
- Development and applications of state-of-the-art AI models

Other
- Bachelor’s degree with 2 or more years of relevant work experience, or a Master's degree with 1 or more years of relevant work experience, or a PhD degree in computer science or a related field (e.g., engineering, applied mathematics, statistics, physical sciences).
- Proficient written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in interdisciplinary teams
- Proven ability to collaborate effectively in multidisciplinary research teams.
- This is a fully onsite position located at BNL in Upton, NY
