The American Antiquarian Society is looking to provide an opportunity for an individual to explore librarianship by working at a national research library, participating in its daily activities, completing library-based projects, and beginning to develop a network of contacts in the field.
Requirements
- Completed some college coursework
- Interest in exploring librarianship and/or information science
- Not yet enrolled in a Master of Library and Information Science (or equivalent) graduate studies program
- Ability to work with historical materials, including exposure to dust, mold, and other irritants
- Ability to lift/carry items weighing up to approximately 50 pounds
- Ability to climb or balance, and pull/push items
- Basic computer skills and ability to learn library software
Responsibilities
- Job shadow or work on projects in newspaper and periodicals collections and readers' services
- Interview other staff and shadow other departments, depending on areas of interest
- Participate in 1-2 field trips to other special collections libraries in the region
- Maintain a journal detailing experiences
- Work with historical newspapers and periodicals
- Handle historical materials
- Participate in training in library software
Other
- Must be at least 21 years of age by the date the internship starts
- Must be able to relocate to Worcester, Massachusetts for the duration of the internship
- Must be able to work 35 hours/week, Monday-Friday, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm
- Must be able to participate in Society events and build relationships with other members of the Society’s community
