STScI's Data Management Division (DMD) needs a Senior Cloud Software Engineer (Database) to design and optimize large-scale data architectures and workflows for the Roman Space Telescope and the astronomy community, ensuring robust, scalable systems for scientific data processing in a cloud environment.
Requirements
- Expert-level proficiency in Python and SQL for data processing and application development.
- Strong experience with PostgreSQL, MSSQL or similar relational databases, including schema design and performance tuning.
- Proven ability to design data architectures for large-scale systems.
- Hands-on experience with AWS (ECS/EKS, Lambda, RDS, S3, SNS/SQS, etc.)
- Familiarity with ETL processes, data lakes, and workflow orchestration tools (e.g., Apache Airflow).
- Experience with Kafka or equivalent streaming/messaging technologies (e.g., AWS Kinesis, SNS/SQS, MSK).
- Experience with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes) and CI/CD tools (Ansible, CodePipeline, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI).
Responsibilities
- Design and optimize relational database schemas for large-scale scientific data systems.
- Lead efforts in database performance tuning, query optimization, and data integrity.
- Develop and maintain data processing pipelines for astronomical datasets in cloud environments.
- Implement Python-based ETL workflows and data orchestration using tools like Apache Airflow or AWS Batch.
- Build and manage AWS-native infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, CloudFormation).
- Develop CI/CD pipelines for automated deployment and testing.

- HYBRID work arrangement, offering flexibility to work both from home and onsite at our Baltimore, MD campus.
