IonQ is seeking a Senior Staff Hardware Design Engineer to develop custom electronics and embedded systems for their quantum control system, enabling advancements in ion trapping, qubit preparation, gate execution, and readout, ultimately contributing to building the world's best quantum computers.
Requirements
- Experience with high-speed, high-resolution waveform generation using FPGAs, DACs, and clocking subsystems
- Experience designing systems with Zynq Ultrascale+ SoCs or similar platforms
- Proven track record of end-to-end ownership of complex board designs - from schematic capture and layout through bring-up and integrated test
- Detailed knowledge of FPGA based signal processing (DDC/DUC, DDS, FIR/IIR filters and PID control)
- Deep knowledge of high-precision clock systems, jitter reduction, and timing synchronization across multiple subsystems
- Knowledge of RF/Microwave/Optics (amplifiers, splitters/combiners, photodetectors)
- Professional programming experience (or an equivalent combination of education and experience) in a general-purpose language such as Python, Go, Rust, or C++
Responsibilities
- Architect, design, and bring up custom mixed-signal electronics and high-speed digital systems used in quantum control and readout
- Design and implement ultra-high-precision clock distribution and synchronization systems to coordinate distributed control hardware at nanosecond (or better) precision
- Develop FPGA-based designs for control systems - including real-time signal processing, high-precision timing, and waveform generation
- Schematic capture with Altium Designer (preferred), OrCAD, or Allegro
- Perform logic design and verification using Vivado (Verilog or VHDL, IP Catalog, and Block Design)
- FPGA based signal processing (DDC/DUC, DDS, FIR/IIR filters and PID control)
- Design and scale the control hardware needed to support multi-system integration and quantum networking, laying the foundation for scalable, distributed quantum computing architectures.
Other
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent industry experience in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field
- 18+ years of experience with complex electronics design for high-speed digital, mixed signal applications
- MS or PhD or equivalent industry experience in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field
- Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communications skills. Ability to communicate effectively with cross functional teams

- The position you are applying for will require access to technology that is subject to U.S. export control and government contract restrictions. Employment with IonQ is contingent on either verifying “U.S. Person” (e.g., U.S. citizen, U.S. national, U.S. permanent resident, or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum) status for export controls and government contracts work, obtaining any necessary license, and/or confirming the availability of a license exception under U.S. export controls. Please note that in the absence of confirming you are a U.S. Person for export control and government contracts work purposes, IonQ may choose not to apply for a license or decline to use a license exception (if available) for you to access export-controlled technology that may require authorization, and similarly, you may not qualify for government contracts work that requires U.S. Persons, and IonQ may decline to proceed with your application on those bases alone. Accordingly, we will have some additional questions regarding your immigration status that will be used for export control and compliance purposes, and the answers will be reviewed by compliance personnel to ensure compliance with federal law.
