Gridware is seeking a systems research engineer to be the go-to expert for how their products detect electromagnetic phenomena around the grid, bridging the gap between research and engineering. The role involves defining performance requirements for measuring and interpreting these phenomena and developing experiments to evaluate the company's technology, ultimately contributing to the safety and reliability of the electrical grid.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience developing performance requirements and testing hardware against those requirements.
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience designing, developing, and executing physical experiments.
  • 3+ years of scientific computing experience in a language like MATLAB or Python.
  • Strong fundamentals in dynamics, kinematics, mechanics of materials, vibrations, and/or robotics.
  • Hardware development: ability to develop mechatronic/robotic hardware prototypes independently (draft requirements, design, fabricate, test).
  • Familiarity with IoT systems, sensing dynamic systems, and integrating sensors into mechanical hardware.
  • Familiarity with measurement system theory and validation.

Responsibilities

  • Own and be the subject matter expert for our product measurement chains: from the underlying physics of the mechanical phenomena we detect, to their translation into sensor voltage changes, to their algorithmic implementation in firmware.
  • Lead the development of product requirements for physical measurements: define the performance needed to measure the meaningful mechanical phenomena that occur around the electrical grid.
  • Select and test sensors to these requirements using methods you develop.
  • Develop physical experiments and hardware-in-the loop testbeds to emulate real-world phenomena and answer scientific questions about technology performance.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including data scientists, product development engineers, and product managers.

Other

  • Either an MS in mechanical engineering + 3 years of industry experience, or a PhD in mechanical engineering + 2 years of industry experience. An MS or PhD in aerospace engineering will also be considered.
  • Project leadership: can lead and deliver on complex, cross-functional problems with strict deadlines.
  • Strong fundamentals in applied mathematics (linear algebra, ODEs, numerical analysis, dynamical systems).
