At Speed & Function, the business problem is to find a Senior WordPress Developer who can take technical ownership within a broader ecosystem, working on complex, content-rich platforms, and contributing to a broader technical and human context.

Requirements

  • WordPress: 6+ months on a 3–5 dev WP project; strong core architecture knowledge; custom themes and plugins from scratch; ACF, custom post types & taxonomies; advanced work with page builders (Gutenberg / Elementor / WPBakery / etc.); solid grasp of template hierarchy, hooks & filters; multisite a plus.
  • Front-End: Strong HTML5, CSS3/SASS, JavaScript (ES6+); component-based approach; responsive layouts; cross-browser support; accessibility & performance optimisation a plus.
  • Integrations & APIs: Third-party and REST APIs; HubSpot (Marketing Hub / Sales Hub / Forms API); search plugins (e.g. SearchWP); webhooks & data sync; GTM a plus.
  • Auth & Security: Custom authentication flows, 2FA, role/permission management; WordPress security best practices.
  • SEO & Performance: Advanced SEO (schema/structured data, Open Graph, XML sitemaps); understanding of Core Web Vitals; experience with SEO plugins; AI/LLM search optimisation a plus.
  • Data, Scale & Performance: DB migrations and content import/export; caching (object/page/CDN); experience with large sites (~2,000+ pages, ~1,500+ users); performance monitoring/troubleshooting.
  • Workflow: Git, local envs (Docker/Local/etc.), staging production deployments; documentation and CI/CD concepts.

Responsibilities

  • Build, extend, and maintain complex WordPress platforms – including custom themes, plugins, and third-party integrations – with an eye on scalability and long-term value.
  • Lead implementation of new features and platform improvements, balancing short-term impact with architectural integrity.
  • Refactor and stabilize legacy codebases, improving reliability, security, and maintainability over time.
  • Collaborate with the CMS Tech Lead, PMs, and fellow engineers to clarify intent, estimate effort, and challenge assumptions where needed.
  • Coordinate with DevOps on deployment pipelines, environment management, and incident resolution to ensure operational continuity.
  • Shape content models, migrations, tagging, and analytics logic in alignment with product and data strategies.
  • Contribute to structured migrations from legacy systems into modern WordPress architectures with minimal disruption.

Other

  • English at B2 level or higher, including the ability to participate in meetings with international clients.
  • A self-directed working style: you keep your promises, you communicate early when plans change and you see yourself as responsible for outcomes, not only for lines of code.
  • Ability to work in a remote-first setup, with a core window in the afternoon and evening to keep overlap with US clients.
  • Ability to participate in client-facing conversations as a technical partner — explaining trade-offs, guiding decisions, and contributing to shared outcomes.
  • Ability to work in a high-trust environment where initiative is noticed and appreciated, and where you are invited to shape how we work, not only to follow existing routines.
