CUNY SPS seeks a Software Engineer to work on the Benefits Access Program, sponsored by the Mayor’s Office for Economic Opportunity (NYC Opportunity), to improve government systems by advancing research, data, and design in program and policy development, service delivery, and budget decisions. The goal is to deliver more effective services and help residents address poverty-related challenges through digital tools and data integration.
Requirements
- Experience with a server-side programming language like Java, C-Sharp, Python, PHP, Node.js.
- Experience with database technologies like MySQL,PostgreSQL
- Experience with front-end technologies: HTML, CSS, JavaScript/TypeScript, js.
- Experience with WordPress development, including theme and plugin customization.
- Experience with agile, iterative development processes and version control such as Git.
- Write clean, efficient, and maintainable code.
- Implement security and data protection protocols in accordance with citywide security policies and industry best practices.
Responsibilities
- Serve as lead engineer for the tech stacks in their portfolio.
- Collaborate with Engineering Managers and Technical Product Managers to drive technical strategy and roadmaps.
- Evaluate and select technology.
- Ensure their tech stack is well tested, documented, monitored, and maintained.
- Maintain and enhance key components of ACCESS NYC and the NYC Benefits Platform.
- Develop and maintain the ACCESS NYC website using WordPress.
- Develop the Benefits Screening API with Node.js and Python.

- Partner with Engineering Manager and Product Managers to design technical strategy for new products and services; contributing to systems design, scoping, and technical roadmapping.
- Serve as lead engineer for assigned products, onboard other engineers and vendors to tech stack, maintain product documentation (in partnership with Technical Product Manager).
- Coordinate development efforts with internal and vendor teams by developing technical implementation plans and reviewing code.
