Google Beam is a new communication technology that aims to solve the problem of distance by allowing users to feel like they are having real, face-to-face conversations across any distance. The Beam Core Apps team is building the future of immersive connection. The quality and velocity of engineering rely on observability. As a Data and Telemetry Software Engineer, the problem is to build the infrastructure to capture performance data across client and cloud, driving technical strategy beyond simple logging to create a robust foundation for product health and user insights.
Requirements
- 2 years of experience with C++ programming, including experience with codebases in a Linux or Unix environment.
- 2 years of experience with software development in one or more general-purpose programming languages.
- 1 year of experience with data analytics, telemetry, logging infrastructure, or creating data dashboards.
- Experience with TypeScript or frontend web technologies for building internal tools and dashboards.
- Experience with distributed systems, data processing, and managing high-volume data pipelines.
- Experience optimizing software for performance, latency, and resource usage in a resource-constrained environment.
- Familiarity with data visualization tools (e.g., internal Google tools like Dasnav/Plx, or external tools like Tableau/Grafana).
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain scalable telemetry infrastructure and client-side instrumentation using C++ to capture product health and performance metrics.
- Collaborate with engineering peers, product managers, and user researchers through design and code reviews to ensure data accuracy, efficiency, and adherence to style guidelines.
- Build and optimize data visualization dashboards and pipelines that provide actionable insights into system reliability, latency, and user experience.
- Triage product or system issues and debug/track/resolve by analyzing telemetry data to pinpoint sources of instability across hardware, network, or service operations.
- Contribute to documentation regarding data schemas and instrumentation guides, adapting content based on product updates to enable self-service insights for the wider team.
