Zendesk is building a next-generation IT Asset Management (ITAM) solution and needs a Backend Software Engineer to power the core Tasks and Approvals capabilities within this platform, which are critical for managing lifecycle workflows, compliance, and automation in enterprise IT environments.

Requirements

  • Familiarity with Ruby on Rails or similar backend frameworks.
  • Knowledge of RDBMS systems like MySQL or Aurora.
  • Familiarity with IT asset management, IT service management (ITSM), or enterprise workflow automation.
  • Experience integrating platform components into domain-specific product teams.
  • Experience with observability tools like DataDog.
  • Experience designing RESTful APIs and integrating with backend services.
  • Familiarity with task lifecycle models, workflow orchestration, or approval logic systems.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement backend systems that bring robust, reusable task and approval functionality to ITAM workflows.
  • Build features that support lifecycle automation, governance enforcement, and audit-ready IT workflows across Zendesks ITAM platform.
  • Collaborate with other ITAM engineers and the global Tasks & Approvals platform teams to extend core features for use in the ITAM domain.
  • Ensure integrations between asset data, approval logic, and task progression are performant, reliable, and auditable.
  • Support internal adoption of platform-wide components for the ITAM-specific needs.
  • Build APIs and services that ensure extensibility, scalability, and security.
  • Write clean, testable, maintainable code, and contribute to code reviews.

  • This is a hybrid role. Candidates must reside within a commutable distance of one of our offices in San Francisco, CA; Austin, TX; or Madison, WI
  • Ability to work cross-functional and translate product needs into technical implementation.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Participate in agile ceremonies and team planning processes.
  • This role must attend our local office for part of the week.
