Google's Attention for Search/Ads team needs to advance user understanding and modeling for modern, generative AI experiences by bridging the gap in understanding new behaviors and moving beyond traditional signals to capture the true value of user attention. This role will solve a high-impact, long-term research problem by building novel models that incorporate alternative interaction signals such as attention and satisfaction, working at the intersection of measurement, metrics, and modeling to directly improve ads quality and search generative AI initiatives.

Requirements

  • 2 years of experience with software development in one or more programming languages (e.g., Python, C++, Java, or Go), or 1 year of experience with an advanced degree.
  • 1 year of experience with one or more of the following: Natural Language Processing (NLP), deep learning, user modeling, reinforcement learning, or specialization in another Machine Learning (ML) field.
  • 1 year of experience with ML infrastructure (e.g., model deployment, model evaluation, optimization, large-scale data processing, debugging).
  • 2 years of experience with data structures and algorithms, and software design optimization.
  • Experience with applied machine learning techniques (e.g., DNNs, transformers) and analyzing large-scale user interaction signals.
  • Experience in performing statistical data analysis and deriving insights from complex datasets or user logs.
  • Familiarity with ads or search technology stacks, or distributed computing infrastructure (e.g., Flume, MapReduce).

Responsibilities

  • Build and evaluate new machine learning models using large-scale user logs data to capture complex user behaviors (attention, satisfaction) beyond standard predicted Click-Through Rate (pCTR).
  • Design and build infrastructure to process large-scale logs and perform statistical data analysis to derive actionable insights.
  • Apply your models to improve core Google products, specifically focusing on search ads, YouTube ads, and alternate pricing mechanisms.
  • Work effectively with cross-functional partners in the ads product area to integrate research findings into production auctions and measurement systems.
  • Steer projects on their own in a fast-moving environment, adapting quickly to new information and changing technology landscapes.

Other

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, or a related technical field.
  • Experience developing accessible technologies.
  • US base salary range for this full-time position is $141,000-$202,000 + bonus + equity + benefits.
  • Google is proud to be an equal opportunity workplace and is an affirmative action employer.
