Sofar is on a mission to connect the world’s oceans by deploying a network of marine weather sensors to power the best marine weather forecasts. The company aims to help customers increase efficiency, reduce emissions, and understand the impacts of climate change on extreme weather and ocean health. The Software Engineering Manager role is focused on leading the development of the vessel routing web application, Wayfinder, which provides critical decision-making support for sea captains and contributes directly to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Requirements
- 2+ years experience as an Engineering Manager, responsible for people management and feature delivery on a technical team.
- Strong knowledge of how modern cloud applications and the web work.
- Professional experience with modern Typescript, React, and (preferably) Node.js.
- Experience hiring for and leading teams at a fast-growing startup is a plus.
- Experience working with weather data or with the maritime industry generally would be helpful.
Responsibilities
- Lead the team responsible for the vessel routing web application, Wayfinder.
- Develop a deep understanding of customers, their workflows, and the data they work with.
- Collaborate with engineers, ocean scientists, product designers, and maritime experts to translate user needs into high-quality software.
- Drive the team to focus on great usability, polish, and a sense of delight in the application.
- Hold the team to a high degree of engineering excellence and contribute to architecture and technical strategy.
- Solve hard technical problems related to fetching, displaying, and analyzing large amounts of weather information over uncertain internet connections.
- Ensure the web client remains smooth, performant, and functional.
