Northrop Grumman is seeking a computational physicist to develop and implement simulation and optimization techniques for novel experimental applications, specifically for superconducting devices, to support the company's mission in global security.

Requirements

  • Experience developing physics-based simulation and optimization techniques.
  • Experience developing mathematical models to understand experimental results.
  • Experience in scientific software development.
  • Proficiency writing code in Python.
  • Experience with running scientific software on high-performing computing systems.
  • Experience in numerical optimization (e.g., Bayesian optimization, gradient-based optimization).
  • Experience with simulating qubits, quantum information, or superconducting electronics.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement simulation models and optimization techniques for novel experiments on superconducting devices.
  • Use simulation tools to analyze and understand test results on superconducting devices.
  • Support the current and future development of simulation tools within function, cost, and schedule constraints.
  • Mentor junior staff.

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government security clearance per business requirements.
  • This position requires the applicant to be a U.S. citizen.
  • PhD in theoretical physics, applied mathematics, or a relevant engineering STEM field plus 8 years of relevant technical experience; Master's degree in theoretical physics, applied mathematics, or a relevant engineering STEM field plus 10 years of relevant technical experience; Bachelor's degree in theoretical physics, applied mathematics, or a relevant engineering STEM field plus 12 years of relevant technical experience.
  • Ability to present technical results to a wide range of audiences.
  • Ability to collaborate in small groups (4-7 people) and to work independently.
