General Motors is looking for a Software Engineering Leader to lead a high-performing team in delivering enterprise-scale Java solutions and shaping the future of Manufacturing IT. The role aims to create scalable, resilient software essential to the manufacturing process using modern engineering practices.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of software engineering experience with a heavy focus on Java
  • 3–5 years in technical leadership or architecture role
  • Hands-on experience with Spring Boot, Hibernate, REST APIs, microservices, and design patterns
  • Proficiency with CI/CD tools (e.g., Jenkins, GitHub Actions), automated testing, and agile methodologies
  • Deep understanding of software engineering principles and modern system design
  • Strong debugging and optimization skills
  • 3+ years experience in Kubernetes/Docker, Quarkus, and cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP

Responsibilities

  • Develop and communicate a clear technical vision aligned with business goals, translating that vision into actionable roadmaps for the team.
  • Advise senior management on technology and forward-looking strategies, championing enterprise-wide engineering standards and best practices that foster consistency, maintainability, and long-term scalability.
  • Proactively evaluate new technologies and drive strategic innovation initiatives that enhance system capabilities and team productivity.
  • Lead end-to-end design, development, and delivery of enterprise-grade applications with a focus on Java, Spring Boot, and microservices architecture.
  • Ensure that all development work adheres to best practices for software craftsmanship, including SOLID principles, TDD, and clean architecture.
  • Drive consistency and code reuse through the use of shared libraries, utilities, and component-based development.
  • Spearhead the adoption of modern infrastructure and deployment strategies using Quarkus Docker, and Kubernetes within a RedHat Open Shift environment

  • Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the candidate is expected to report to their primary work location (Austin Innovation Center) three times per week, at minimum, or other frequency dictated by the business.
  • Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performance engineering culture that emphasizes learning, accountability, and innovation.
  • Mentor and coach engineers at all levels, providing ongoing technical feedback, growth opportunities, and career development support.
  • Facilitate agile ceremonies and ensure alignment with product managers, architects, and QA engineers to deliver business value efficiently.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to simplify complex topics.
