Toast is looking to solve one of the biggest challenges in the restaurant industry: managing cash flow, by building integrated tools like Cash Flow Insights, Bill Pay, and the upcoming Books product to empower operators to streamline payments, gain real-time visibility into their finances, and maintain accurate records.
Requirements
- 8+ years of back-end experience in Java, Kotlin, or other object-oriented languages
- Deep understanding of distributed systems, enterprise messaging, and/or microservices at scale.
- Proven ability to balance hands-on execution with strategic technical leadership.
- Experience building financial systems such as payments, lending, reconciliation, or bookkeeping platforms.
- Familiarity with regulatory and compliance requirements for financial products (e.g., PCI, SOX, KYC).
- Background in data modeling and financial reporting, especially with high-volume transaction data.
- Knowledge of integration patterns with external financial institutions (e.g., bank APIs, payment processors).
Responsibilities
- Drive the technical strategy and architecture for Embedded Finance across multiple engineering teams.
- Identify and prioritize the most impactful problems, balancing deep technical contributions with cross-team influence.
- Partner with Product, Design, Compliance, Finance, and vendors to deliver resilient and scalable financial products.
- Lead architectural discussions, make thoughtful tradeoffs, and shape the long-term technical roadmap.
- Mentor and model engineering excellence, raising the bar for coding, testing, and design practices while enabling others to deliver at scale.
- Act as a multiplier by spotting systemic challenges and driving improvements that increase productivity, reliability, and impact.
