Walmart is seeking a Staff Data Scientist for the Sam's Fraud Engine (SaFE) team to create innovative solutions for fraud prevention across digital channels
Requirements
- Strong expertise in ML algorithms such as classification models, decision trees, XGBoost, deep learning, anomaly detection, and feature engineering
- Experience operationalizing ML and data-driven systems in production environments
- Deep experience with distributed systems and microservices (low-latency, highly available architectures)
- Expertise with big-data and streaming platforms such as Cassandra, Hive, PySpark, BigQuery, Kafka, or Databricks
- Strong proficiency with tools, libraries, and frameworks used for large-scale data processing, analysis, and visualization
- Experience in MLOps, performance engineering, testing, tuning, monitoring, and observability
- Experience with Python
Responsibilities
- Serve as a technical leader across AI/ML, distributed systems, and data engineering initiatives
- Work with business owners, product managers, and engineering teams to understand complex business problems and translate them into scalable technical solutions
- Architect and guide the implementation of low-latency, highly available microservices and large-scale data-processing pipelines
- Define technical direction and influence long-term engineering strategy, platform evolution, and product roadmaps
- Support our Data Science partners in conducting exploratory data analysis, prototyping and operationalizing heuristic rules, ML models, network-graphs and other data-driven solutions
- Ensure robust MLOps practices—including automation, testing, deployment, monitoring, and model lifecycle management
- Lead design reviews, code reviews, and provide technical mentorship to senior and junior engineers
Other
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 4 years’ experience in software engineering or related area
- 6 years’ experience in software engineering or related area
- Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Computer Information Systems, Software Engineering, or related area and 2 years' experience in software engineering or related area
- Outstanding communication skills—able to influence senior stakeholders and explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences
- Prior experience in fraud detection, risk systems, anomaly detection, or similar domains
