Block is looking for a Staff/Principal Frontend Engineer to serve as the technical authority for their financial management tools team, driving architectural initiatives, setting technical direction, implementing key features, and mentoring engineers to empower businesses to run more efficiently and profitably.
Requirements
- 12+ years of experience with JavaScript/TypeScript and modern web frameworks (React, Next.js).
- A proven track record of leading large-scale (spanning ~1+ year) frontend projects, especially those involving reusable component systems and multiple contributors.
- Experience as a Tech Lead, defining technical vision, scoping complex work, and unblocking teams.
- A focus on frontend system health—you’ve driven incident response, implemented testing frameworks, and upheld high standards for performance and accessibility.
- Experience modernizing frontend stacks or leading org-level migrations.
- Familiarity with component systems like Storybook.
- Deep knowledge of A/B testing, experimentation platforms (e.g. Optimizely, LaunchDarkly), and growth/activation funnels.
Responsibilities
- Lead major engineering efforts: Design and implement complex, user-facing features and frontend architectures that scale.
- Define technical direction: Drive architectural decisions, system design, and best practices across Financial Suite and related orgs.
- Partner cross-functionally: Collaborate closely with product, design, backend, and mobile teams to shape impactful product experiences.
- Champion platform modernization: Lead the migration away from legacy frameworks like Ember and advocate for scalable technologies like React and Next.js.
- Prioritize reliability and velocity: Uphold high standards for performance, accessibility, testing, monitoring, and operational excellence.
- Mentor and grow engineers: Delegate complex projects, coach others, and foster a culture of inclusion, technical excellence, and ownership.
- Lead org-wide initiatives: Influence strategy for seller acquisition, activation, and financial decision-making.
