Vera Institute of Justice is looking to solve the problem of mass incarceration and advance justice, particularly racial justice, through research and data analysis.
Requirements
- Experience with data analysis in R and data visualization in Datawrapper is preferred
- Commitment to equity and community-centered safety
- Experience conducting quantitative and/or qualitative data collection and analysis
- Experience working within government and communicating research findings to diverse audiences
- Methodological expertise and experience with research projects
- Familiarity with administrative case management systems and community-based organizations
- Ability to compile, clean, and document disconnected datasets into a master analyzable dataset
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with researchers on research relating to a specific project, including data collection, analysis, fieldwork, report writing, stakeholder engagement, and dissemination
- Clean and analyze administrative data from county or state agencies to help stakeholders understand patterns and track changes
- Conduct interviews with stakeholders and/or directly impacted people in selected jurisdictions to understand the implementation and effects of new policies/practices
- Develop research questions, clean and analyze data, and synthesize key findings in written and visual formats
- Build data infrastructure, create community-centered measures of success, and build performance measurement and management processes
- Analyze 911 data, survey of public safety leaders, and budget analysis of investments in public safety
- Transform data into an analyzable format by compiling, cleaning, and documenting disconnected datasets into a master analyzable dataset
Other
- Available to work up to 10 hours per week during the summer
- Must be a Graduate Center Ph.D. student from any program with research interests in criminal or immigration justice
- Must attend a welcome session at the beginning of the fellowship, do a brief presentation on their work at the end of the summer, and write a blog post about their experiences before the end of the Fall 2026 semester
- Must be able to work onsite at Vera's offices in Industry City, Brooklyn for at least 60 hours over the course of 10 weeks
- Must submit a letter of interest, resume/CV, current Graduate Center transcript, and letter of support from primary advisor
